The Prostate Cancer Research Institute is a charitable not-for-profit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of men’s lives by supporting research and disseminating information that educates and empowers patients, families and the medical community.

PCRI was founded in 1996 by internationally recognized prostate cancer oncologists Mark Scholz, MD and Stephen Strum, MD, with support from Daniel Freeman Hospital Foundation. Drs. Scholz’s and Strum’s vision was that: “an organization providing insightful clinical research in combination with high-level educational activities directed at both the patient and physician, would greatly enhance outcomes for prostate cancer patients everywhere”.

A patient who understands his disease and his treatment options is empowered to communicate more effectively with his physicians and will obtain a better outcome. PCRI provides uses many communications tools to accomplish this mission. PCRI programs and services include:

Helpline – The support line staff’s purpose is to help the patient understand his diagnosis and his treatment options.

Insights Newsletter – PCRI produces a free quarterly newsletter containing articles from leading experts to educate, inform and empower the prostate cancer community about the latest advances in prostate cancer. Circulation is over 20,000.

Conferences – Every September, PCRI Conferences bring together patients, caregivers, physicians and institutional supporters for interactive sessions and lectures. The video-recorded presentations are used at support group meetings around the world.

Website – In 1998, the PCRI was an early adopter of the Internet as an educational tool. The website provides over 5000 pages of information intended to assist a newly-diagnosed or advanced patient to understand the biology and extent of their prostate cancer empowering them with knowledge about the best options available.

Research – While our main mission is education, PCRI allocates a portion of donations to support new, and potentially breakthrough, research projects.

Advocacy – PCRI has judiciously come out in support of worthy prostate cancer causes to promote awareness, encourage increased research and to expedite FDA approval of new therapies.
